Professor Bela Kapur is the Robert F. Drinan, S.J., Visiting Professor of Human Rights Chair for 2013-2014 and will be in residence for the Fall 2013 semester. Professor Kapur is on leave from the United Nations, where she recently served as the Political Affairs Adviser in the Office of the Joint United Nations-League of Arab States Special Representative for Syria in Damascus, Syria. During her service with the United Nations, Professor Kapur has worked as the Chief of Staff ad interim for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya based in Tripoli, Libya, and served in human rights positions in Sudan, Iraq, Colombia and Afghanistan. Professor Kapur has also worked with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, and the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Political Affairs located in United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Prior to working with the United Nations, Professor Kapur served with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation’s Mission to Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as the Multinational Force & Observers based in the Sinai peninsula, Egypt. Professor Kapur began her legal career in the international corporate sector working with McKenna & Co. and Norton Rose, based in the City of London.
Professor Kapur’s primary areas of work and interest are human rights, women’s empowerment, political and conflict analysis, and management of UN peace operations. Her LL.B is from Buckingham University, UK, and she has a Master’s Degree in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center.
