Assessing the Impact of Federal and State Law on Public Health Preparedness

The Issue in Brief

This CDC-funded project was designed to assess and evaluate how law affects the public health system's preparedness activities and the system's ability to respond more effectively to a variety of threats to the population's health and other public health needs. Specifically, the project addressed how to understand the impact of federal laws on the public health system and how to translate that knowledge to facilitate state and local health system response to current and emerging public health threats. The goal was to provide the first systematic understanding of how law influences public health preparedness activities. When disseminated to the field, the findings should help strengthen the capacity of public health systems to more effectively protect the public's health.
