GEORGETOWN LAW STUDENT BAR ASSOCIATION: Student Health Insurace. ruler

Student Health Insurance**

During the beginning of the year, it is difficult to find time to research and select a health care plan that is right for you. For this reason, the Student Bar Association has compiled a reference guide for students shopping for different health insurance providers. In previous years we have prepared comparative charts. However, we have noted that those charts are too simplistic and do not account for different factors that alter an insurance plan’s price, coverage, etc. Thos factors may include age and health. With some 2,200 students, JDs and LLMS, a health insurance comparison chart cannot possible account for all the variation in our law school's student population. So instead, this year we decided to provide a more general guide to some of the most commonly used health insurance providers. Students are encouraged to visit the websites below to find the insurance coverage that best fits their needs. See below for past years’ comparison charts.

REFERENCE GUIDE TO HEALTH INSURANCE PLANS:

  1. Georgetown Student Health Insurance Website or call (202) 687-4883. Also see Description of Benefits Brochure for a description of 2008-2009 benefits.
  2. Aetna.
  3. Carefirst BlueCross Blueshield
  4. Assurant Health:
  5. Kaiser Permanente
  6. Free Insurance Program Comparisons: http://www.healthplanone.com/

Additionally, if you plan on waiving the MEGA Life and Health plan, you must do so on Student Access.  The school's policy is that you must have major medical insurance.  This means that you must have health insurance that provides $100,000 in coverage for each major illness or injury.  Further, the plan must also cover visits to doctors in non-emergency situations.  For more information about what a plan must cover, check with the school insurance office, which can be reached at 202-687-4883.

For the 2008-2009 Academic Year, you must have health insurance by September 15th.

FOR PREVIOUS YEARS' INSURANCE COMPARISON CHARTS:

**This Guide has been provided by the Student Bar Association (SBA). SBA is a student organization, and the material contained herein has been provided by students, not the administration or the University, and should not be construed as recommending a particular insurer. Students should research their options carefully and contact their local insurers to discuss plan-specific definitions.
